November’s Webstore-exclusive Soldier of Fortune figure was none other than L’Empereur Napoleon, depicted at the auspicious occasion of his own coronation, with accompanying portrait artist François Gérard. So struck were we by the pair of miniatures, and the paint job provided by the Warlord Games Studio’s own Kirsten Williams, no stranger to painting awards herself (we hear she’s got some kind of fancy-looking sword!), that we decided to run a community painting competition, with a stupendous prize on the line – a Black Powder 28mm Farmhouse Assault – La Haye Sainte Collectors Edition battle-set! We also decided on a prize for the ‘most entertaining entry’, which would net its recipient a Napoleon’s Berlin Carriage set.

Thank you to all who entered! We were blown away by your brushwork and inventiveness, but ultimately there could only be one winner. As is only befitting we asked Kirsten herself to judge! The winning entries are below (click on any image to enlarge it), along with Kirsten’s comments, plus a couple of honourable mentions.

Winner – Christoffer McLaughlin Schou

Kirsten: This entry immediately stood out – the colour transitions are smooth, the highlighting crisp and the embroidery sharp. Even the shading on the bases was smooth and unobtrusive to the overall composition. I was particularly impressed with the blue of the artist’s jacket (I’m a big fan of a nicely done blue). The portrait on the easel is hand-painted, which is astounding. All told, this was a hugely impressive piece of work.

Most Entertaining – Rhys Topping

Kirsten: When an entry has me spontaneously laugh out loud when I first set eyes on it, it’s going to be a winner!

Honourable Mentions

Xavier Lastra

Kirsten: I grew up doing Fine Art as a GCSE and A-Level, and the complete authenticity of the easel in this piece brought back fond memories of school. Evidently, this painter has done this for real at some point.

Michael H

Kirsten: The artist in this one stood out from all the others with the choice of colour. Eyes are particularly hard to get right, and on close inspection, the eyes on the artist were beautifully done.

Look out for more Community painting competitions as we venture into 2024!
