The meat of the book is in learning to play the game. This is achieved through the Mission system: six bespoke scenarios designed to teach the fundamentals of the game, introducing each mechanic in a streamlined, logical order using the included miniatures, tokens, and game mat. The Field Manual is not a rulebook, but is a gateway to a robust understanding of the basics upon which you can then build upon with the full Bolt Action: Third Edition rulebook when you’re ready.
Each mission is prefaced by an introduction identifying which miniatures are required, so that players can get stuck into playing rather than wait to build all their miniatures. The book also provides specific building instructions, meaning you’ll have all the right equipment for the missions ahead. Later in the book, you’ll also find painting guides for both US Rangers and German Grenadiers.
Miniatures
Of course, Bolt Action is nothing without miniatures to build and play with, and the Introductory Set has you covered there, pitting 12 elite US Rangers against Grenadiers of the German Wehrmacht. Each sprue is absolutely packed with detail and options, with dynamically posed bodies and multiple arm variants, and a multitude of combat equipment. The Field Manual’s construction guides will see that you new models are equipped appropriately and dressed for battle.
We’ve also included a plastic ruined farmhouse terrain piece. Quite aside from its use in demonstrating several key rules, such as cover, it’s inclusion as a three-dimensional object on the paper battlefield really elevates the visual aspect of your games.
