Personal Remarks from Gen. Moriarty
Mr President, if accurate, the reconnaissance pilot’s observations speak to a level of devastation at Dresden that the Los Alamos team simply did not foresee. While I think we can quite safely say that the Nazi A-bomb labs have been taken out of action, and the city denied to the enemy as a resource, the meteorological anomalies are unexpected and troubling. They seem to be of a far greater magnitude than the anomalies reported at Los Alamos, and far more dangerous.
Given the problem out east that the Old Man team have run into and the loss of that weapon, I strongly advise that we get eyes on the Pacific crash site as soon as possible – before the Japanese do. We need to make sure they don’t get anything classified from it, and see if it’s had the same result. The press have been told that we detected a volcanic eruption, but that won’t fly for long if Iwo Jima looks the same as Dresden.
Wherever the hell Wild Bill has got to, I hope he’s keeping an ear to the ground about this. I’ve worked in intelligence for a long time, Mr President, and I can tell you that I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. We’ve solved one problem, and now we’ve got some big questions to try and answer. What Hitler, Goebbels, and co. decide to say publicly will also be very telling.
If you need me, I’ll be at Los Alamos, speaking to the lab-coats. I’ll keep you updated.
Moriarty.
