Armies of the British Commonwealth pre-orders are underway, and we’ve begun looking at the nations making up this unique book. We recently checked out Australia’s special rules, and now it’s the turn of the True North – Canada!
Just like we did with Australia, we’re only looking at Canada’s National Special Rules today – not their unique units or the options they can select from the Standard Commonwealth Units Roster. Have a look below, though – there’s plenty to be getting on with in this section alone.
Not only is that a chunky set of rules, it’s completely different to the last lot we looked at! Dogged means that the more casualties your units take, the less likely they are to run away (and provides a nice boost to small teams), while Highly Motivated sees the return in spirit of the classic V1/2 Vengeance rule. This makes your Canadians more likely to pass Order Tests when near the foe, rewarding aggressive play – perfect when combined with Flame Warfare. With a flamethrower now available to each Rifle Platoon, no Canadian force should be without plenty of short-range nastiness.
HMGs have proven to be incredibly popular and powerful in Third Edition, and the Browning Machine Gun rule allows you to festoon your tanks with MMGs and HMGs for even more firepower. While this isn’t free, it does allow you to recreate some iconic wartime images – and lay down a rain of lead! Finally, some Canadian infantry can be taken as Airborne, with the classic combination of Stubborn and Veteran giving you a hard core of paras to anchor your force. We’ll find out which units exactly once we get into the Canadian army list proper in the future!
Just from this snippet, we can see that a Canadian force is going to play very differently to an Australian or British one, with a very definite focus on getting up close and personal, no matter the cost.
This is just the second of six sets of National Special Rules found in Armies of the British Commonwealth. Are you ready to cross the oceans and bring Canadian might to bear on the Bolt Action tabletop?
