Our old mate Dave Taylor is back at it with another book, packed full of hobby goodness, so naturally we had to get our hands on a copy as soon as it landed in our warehouse! This latest offering veers off a little from typical Warlord Games fare, but nevertheless covers a subject that’s close to our hobby hearts – dungeons! Dave has assembled a gang of some of the finest tabletop creators out there to show off some of their very best terrain work, covering a wide variety of fantastical (and fantastic) dungeons, castles, cities, and more besides!
Tabletop wargaming and tabletop roleplaying games have always had a significant overlap in terms of player base and ethos, and we see that on full display in this latest book, the aptly named The Tremendous Tome of Epic Dungeons!
As both a wargamer and a roleplaying enthusiast, I’m really excited by all the possibilities and ideas showcased within, and the table setups shown run the gamut from classic castles inspired by real-life locations, through dank dungeons of a distinctly ‘old-school’ variety, to ethereal planes of weirdness and magic – there’s something for everyone within!
The lineup of creators Dave has put together for this showcase have centuries of table-building and modelling between them, and the keen-eyed may notice a few famous names amongst them – yes, that is the L. Gygax! Naturally, Dave’s own work also makes an appearance, in the form of his ‘Sinister Sands of the Snakekin’ layout, and a personal favourite of mine has to be @dndterrainbuilds’ awesome ‘Beggar’s Well’ village setup, which is packed full of awesome character and has a brilliant backstory to go along with it – but that’s just scratching the surface! There’s also a handy section defining the hows, whats, and whys of dungeons, as well as the contributors’ personal reasons for their undertaking these awesome tables, and most importantly tons of glossy pictures showing off their builds!
While Warlord Games has yet to produce any roleplaying games ourselves, we do sell plenty of awesome miniatures that are perfect for your RPG sessions, no matter the setting! If you’re after the gritty low-fantasy aesthetic, look no further than our Vikings, Saxons, and Normans (for an older vibe) or our awesome Landsknecht range for something a bit further along the developmental timescale (i.e., after the invention of huge floppy hats!). Our Pike & Shotte Villagers also make awesome NPCs for this sort of game, and anyone who’s ever run a campaign will know there’s always that one barkeep or blacksmith that was supposed to be a one-off throwaway that the party adopts for the duration!
Warlords of Erehwon Samurai
For an alternative setting for your TTRPG, our extensive range of Samurai is ideal for representing all manner of friends and foes, not least the Samurai Heroes boxed set – brimming with enough characters to represent an entire party of adventurers, from ninja master to elegant Geisha, to embittered Ronin. They are just begging for backstories!
For those wanting more out-and-out swords & sorcery goodness, we also stock a wide range of the excellent Frostgrave and Oathmark plastic boxed sets and metal blister packs, allowing you to populate your dungeons with everything from wizards to snake-men! For those wanting to really push the boat out with a ‘big bad’ or suitably scary monster, the Mythic Americas range is ideal, and also provides plenty of inspiration for setting. You can even get grim and dark in the far future with the Stargrave plastics, perfect for plundering ruined spaceships and asteroid bases!
As any veteran roleplayer will tell you, you can never have too many miniatures in your collection, and you can never have too many ideas for your next dungeon. With The Tremendous Tome of Epic Dungeons, and our range of fantasy miniatures, we’ve got you covered! You walk into the Warlord Games store and see an enormous range of hobby goodness before you… roll for initiative!
