In our first Epic Battles: Revolution! sprue focus article, we looked at the ‘generic’ infantry frame, which gives both British and Continental forces their Regular and Militia infantry. The sprues for this range are designed to work in concert with each other, which allowed us to cram as many models onto each one as we could – today we’re looking at the next piece of the puzzle: The British infantry sprue!
As the name suggests, this sprue is absolutely packed with redcoats, with eight individual strips plus a command strip (as always, complete with optional second standard bearer) ensuring your regiments all have subtle variations in poses and faces, and no two look the same. Now, you could also paint all these Regulars up as Continentals, but given that this is the British sprue focus we’ll focus firmly on the red rather than the blue – but it’s handy to know!
In addition to the Regulars, there’s also a very snazzy command strip for the Militia, plus five Light Infantry skirmishers, including an officer who’s one of my personal favourite models in the entire range. For such a small chap, he’s got absolute bags of character, and his pose is fantastically dynamic. These ‘Light Bobs’ (their historical nickname) are perfect for screening your advance and ensuring that the Continentals keep their distance.
As effective as the British Regulars are, they still need good leaders to take them into battle (and interpret your dice rolls into military orders)! This sprue has you covered with a brace of mounted commanders, perfect for serving as either regimental colonels or senior officers, and again these chaps could be either British or American, depending on your preference!
The British Army in America was actually a rather undermanned force, relying heavily on ‘Hessian’ German auxiliaries and native allies – in our next sprue focus, we’ll be taking a look at these troops, and more. Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules…
