A Bavarian Day in Normandy

Bavarian soldiers were involved in some of the bloodiest and most intense battles of World War II in Normandy. After the Allied landing on June 6, 1944, known as D-Day, they immediately found themselves in heavy combat. Heinrich “Hein” Severloh is one of many well known examples.
In the first days after the invasion, Bavarian units were part of the German defensive lines desperately trying to hold back the Allied forces’ advance. They fought in the dense hedgerows and fields of Normandy, often engaged in close-quarters combat.

Their involvement in the defense of strategically important cities such as Caen and Saint-Lô is particularly well-known. Here, bitter battles took place as Bavarian soldiers fought against advancing Allied troops. The city of Saint-Lô was nearly completely destroyed, and the fighting there was characterized by great intensity.They were as well involved in German counterattacks, attempting to push back the Allied troops and halt their advance. Monuments and stories from endless bavarian graveyards are stell telling These stories till today. These counterattacks often involved bitter close-quarters combat and heavy artillery fire with heavy losses.

Despite the harsh conditions and the immense pressure of the Allied offensive, Bavarian soldiers often showed remarkable bravery and determination. Many of them paid a high price for their actions, and their courage remains an important part of the history of the Normandy battles in World War II.
As they strive with all their might to repel the Allied advances, they face courageous French resistance fighters, heavily equiped engineers and elite parachute units. Local heroes from the resistence fight side by side with the Allies to liberate their homeland from German occupation. The Allies, numerous and resolute, under the command of experienced generals such as Eisenhower and Montgomery, are determined to break through in Normandy. With a variety of units and state-of-the-art equipment, they carefully plan their attacks, always aiming to break the German resistance.

On our game day of the Bolt Action event “A Bavarian Day in Normandy,” the diversity of forces and various weather and terrain conditions involved in the battles of Normandy will be fully showcased. From Bavarian soldiers to French resistance fighters and the US and british Allies – each side will have its own challenges and opportunities.
